Chia-Ying started music cognition research when she was a student research assistant in National Taiwan University. In this time she worked on a new representation for rhythms closer to how humans perceive music. In 2003 she wrote a programme for generating jazz-like melodies with genetic algorithm. Before she came to Ivrea, Chia-Ying was developing an algorithm for classifying music genres with rhythm.
